Ventilation

Proper ventilation is often one of the most overlooked aspects of a roofing system.  Ventilation is very important.  Improper ventilation can lead to:

  • Higher electric bills
  • premature aging of the roofing system (shingles and decking)
  • warping or cracking of any wood framing
  • damage to the siding, flashing and/or paint.

To ensure that you receive proper ventilation please contact us and have one of our trained representatives guide you through the process.

Our friends at the Federal Housing Administration recommend 1 square foot of ventilation (both intake and exhaust) for every 300 square feet of attic space.  For example, if you have a 2,100 square-foot one-story home you will likely need at least 7 square feet of ventilation.

State Roofing Company installs the following ventilation equipment most often:

  • Ridge Vent: 8 lineal feet of ridge vent equals 1 square feet of ventilation
  • Air Hawks (AKA turtle vents): 4 air hawks equal 1 square feet of ventilation
  • Solar-powered exhaust fans: approximately 2.5 square feet of ventilation
  • Soffit vents

Ridge vents and air hawks  work best when working in conjunction with adequate intake vents, which in most cases is soffit vents. Many roofing contracts ignore this when they are not looking out for their customers’ best interest.  State Roofing Company will work with you to make sure that the structure has all of the ventilation, intake and exhaust, needed to give the roofing system years of quality service.

State Roofing Company also tends to stay away from standard electric powered vents because they are not very reliable.  Homeowners very rarely check to see if their exhaust vents are still working, and there is no warning system to alert when one fails.  State Roofing Company prefers to install equipment that we know will work in any condition. That being said, there are some exceptions when electric exhaust vents should be installed.

Make sure you have adequate ventilation installed whenever your roofing system is replaced.  To ensure that your roofing system is installed by the best use State Roofing Company.
