Fall Roof Maintenance

October 9, 2019 By State Roofing

fall-home-maintenance

As the relentless heat of summer fades and cooler temperatures roll in, it is the perfect time to do routine maintenance to your roof. After all, winter will be here before you know it! Here are a few tips that will assure your roof is in perfect shape for the winter:

Inspect: Take a look at your roof’s current state and make note of any cracking shingles or broken roof tiles. Be sure to contact Sate Roofing Company to take a closer look and perform a thorough inspection.

Trim: During the fall trees not only begin to shed their leaves but also shed limbs, branches, and twigs. When the weather turns colder and high winds affect your area, any overhanging limbs and branches can become dislodged and land directly on your roof. By having them removed, future damage and accidents can be prevented

Clean: As the trees begin to shed their leaves cleaning your gutters becomes essential. This includes the removal of any existing twigs, dirt, and other debris that may have built up since your last cleaning. Make sure all drainage areas are unblocked by leaves and debris. Do not try to remove excessive debris with a water hose as it may cause downspouts to clog and the affect the gutter system.

No Waving of Deductibles Bill: Texas HB 2102

September 10, 2019 By State Roofing

harca

Since 1989, waiving insurance policy deductibles has been common place in Texas (and came about as the result of a poorly worded statute passed that same year). Contractors who have broken the 1989 law by waving deductibles (specifically roofing contractors) have been putting homeowners at risk, too. Homeowners are lured into signing contracts with these “deductible eaters” based on promises of a “free roof” or “lower deductible”. And then, homeowners/policyholders are duped into committing insurance fraud when in submitting a request pursuant to their policy for replacement cost (RCV) hold-back, they failed to tell their insurance company that the deductible part of the claim had not been incurred.

In May 2019, the 86th Texas Legislature passed two bills pertaining to the roofing industry. HB 2102 – Prohibition Against Waiving of Deductibles is extremely important to read and understand for contractors and homeowners alike.

SECTION 2. Section 27.02, Business & Commerce Code:

(b) “Texas law requires a person insured under a property
insurance policy to pay any deductible applicable to a claim made under the policy. It is a violation of Texas law for a seller of goods or services who reasonably expects to be paid wholly or partly from the proceeds of a property insurance claim to knowingly allow the insured person to fail to pay, or assist the insured person’s failure to pay, the applicable insurance deductible.”

(d)  An offense under this section is a Class B misdemeanor.

SECTION 5.

This Act will take effect September 1, 2019.

It is extremely important to be educated on the matter so that you do not find yourself in trouble due to misinformation. If your contractor does not have Section 2 of this bill in the contract, BEWARE.

“Full Roof Replacement” Pricing Scams

August 23, 2019 By State Roofing

no number post

IF IT SOUNDS TO GOOD TO BE TRUE, IT USUALLY IS!

Some contractors offer you a tantalizingly low price, one that’s often far lower than any other competitor in your area. But once work begins, that price could creep up due to “unforeseen problems” and inflated material costs.

The costs of roofing materials do fluctuate, but a contractor shouldn’t attempt to increase the price for materials in the middle of your project.

Choosing a Roofing Contractor

July 16, 2019 By State Roofing

choosing-roofing-contractor

Choosing the right roofing contractor can be a daunting task. Many times, a homeowner is in need of a roofing contractor because they have unexpectedly been struck by a sudden hail or windstorm that has left their roof severely damaged. Selecting a roofing contractor becomes even more challenging because it was so unexpected, and many homeowners only replace a roof once every 15-20 years, something they are not very familiar with. Not to mention when severe weather hits, roofing contractors from all over the country converge to the affected area, adding to the chaos and confusion for homeowners. Homeowners need to be vigilant in these times when making a roofer selection. A few helpful tips can help smooth over the process. First and foremost, never pay a contractor in advance for work that has yet to be done. Not a penny. Not even if the contractor claims to need the money to purchase materials. Any reputable roofing contract will have a line of credit at a local roofing material supplier and will be able to complete the job without any up front payment. Second, be wary of door to door roofing contractors. If a roofer has enough time to interrupt your day and knock on your door, there is usually a reason they are out begging for work. Third, you will want to select a contractor that has an actual business in your area. Too many times a roofer will have a local “office” and/or phone number listed in their literature, but it is simply a PO Box they rented as soon as the storm hit, and a burner phone they picked up on their way into town. By taking these simple factors into consideration you will be far more successful when it comes to selecting a roofing contractor that will be around, after the storm traffic has cleared, to honor their workmanship and warranties.
