Fall Roof Maintenance

October 9, 2019 By State Roofing

fall-home-maintenance

As the relentless heat of summer fades and cooler temperatures roll in, it is the perfect time to do routine maintenance to your roof. After all, winter will be here before you know it! Here are a few tips that will assure your roof is in perfect shape for the winter:

Inspect: Take a look at your roof’s current state and make note of any cracking shingles or broken roof tiles. Be sure to contact Sate Roofing Company to take a closer look and perform a thorough inspection.

Trim: During the fall trees not only begin to shed their leaves but also shed limbs, branches, and twigs. When the weather turns colder and high winds affect your area, any overhanging limbs and branches can become dislodged and land directly on your roof. By having them removed, future damage and accidents can be prevented

Clean: As the trees begin to shed their leaves cleaning your gutters becomes essential. This includes the removal of any existing twigs, dirt, and other debris that may have built up since your last cleaning. Make sure all drainage areas are unblocked by leaves and debris. Do not try to remove excessive debris with a water hose as it may cause downspouts to clog and the affect the gutter system.

No Waving of Deductibles Bill: Texas HB 2102

September 10, 2019 By State Roofing

harca

Since 1989, waiving insurance policy deductibles has been common place in Texas (and came about as the result of a poorly worded statute passed that same year). Contractors who have broken the 1989 law by waving deductibles (specifically roofing contractors) have been putting homeowners at risk, too. Homeowners are lured into signing contracts with these “deductible eaters” based on promises of a “free roof” or “lower deductible”. And then, homeowners/policyholders are duped into committing insurance fraud when in submitting a request pursuant to their policy for replacement cost (RCV) hold-back, they failed to tell their insurance company that the deductible part of the claim had not been incurred.

In May 2019, the 86th Texas Legislature passed two bills pertaining to the roofing industry. HB 2102 – Prohibition Against Waiving of Deductibles is extremely important to read and understand for contractors and homeowners alike.

SECTION 2. Section 27.02, Business & Commerce Code:

(b) “Texas law requires a person insured under a property
insurance policy to pay any deductible applicable to a claim made under the policy. It is a violation of Texas law for a seller of goods or services who reasonably expects to be paid wholly or partly from the proceeds of a property insurance claim to knowingly allow the insured person to fail to pay, or assist the insured person’s failure to pay, the applicable insurance deductible.”

(d)  An offense under this section is a Class B misdemeanor.

SECTION 5.

This Act will take effect September 1, 2019.

It is extremely important to be educated on the matter so that you do not find yourself in trouble due to misinformation. If your contractor does not have Section 2 of this bill in the contract, BEWARE.

Hand Nail VS. Nail Gun

September 5, 2019 By State Roofing

hand nail

At State Roofing Company we only HAND NAIL, and here is why:

Improperly nailed roofs can be more susceptible to leaks and damage from storms. Ideal nail placement on roof shingles is limited to a very small area. If the nail is driven outside that area, it could impair the roof and void the manufacturer’s warranty. Contractors who hand nail can feel whether or not the nail catches the wood, but don’t get that same feeling with a nail gun. Hand nailing also ensures accurate placement of nail on designated nail line. Nail guns can drive nails between boards or outside the ideal placement area which will loosen over time, eventually causing raised shingles or leakage.
