Fall Roof Maintenance

October 9, 2019 By State Roofing

fall-home-maintenance

As the relentless heat of summer fades and cooler temperatures roll in, it is the perfect time to do routine maintenance to your roof. After all, winter will be here before you know it! Here are a few tips that will assure your roof is in perfect shape for the winter:

Inspect: Take a look at your roof’s current state and make note of any cracking shingles or broken roof tiles. Be sure to contact Sate Roofing Company to take a closer look and perform a thorough inspection.

Trim: During the fall trees not only begin to shed their leaves but also shed limbs, branches, and twigs. When the weather turns colder and high winds affect your area, any overhanging limbs and branches can become dislodged and land directly on your roof. By having them removed, future damage and accidents can be prevented

Clean: As the trees begin to shed their leaves cleaning your gutters becomes essential. This includes the removal of any existing twigs, dirt, and other debris that may have built up since your last cleaning. Make sure all drainage areas are unblocked by leaves and debris. Do not try to remove excessive debris with a water hose as it may cause downspouts to clog and the affect the gutter system.

Buying a Home?

August 1, 2019 By State Roofing

new home roof

When it comes to buying your first house, a lot of home-buyers seem to look over the state of the roof, unless it’s in extreme distress. However, the roof should be one of the first items on your checklist when you’re on the hunt for that perfect house.

Ask the seller about the age of the roof; its history (whether there has been any damage in the past that needed to be fixed); how often the homeowner got it properly inspected; and the projected lifespan of the roof (depending on the material that it’s made from).

What You Should Look At:

1. The Obvious
Take a solid look at the state of the roof. Common warning signs would be missing shingles, mold, worn spots, and curled edges.
2. Proper Ventilation
The ventilation system of a home is a major factor in the “healthiness” of a roof. Although the roof may be relatively new, if the ventilation system isn’t up-to-date or working properly, you will have problems with the roof down the road. A proper ventilation system lets sunlight and air come in easily; it also reduces energy costs and decreases the level of moisture in the home. If the system is not working properly, you could be facing mold or a warped roof.
3. Gutters and Good Drainage System
A drainage system involves three aspects: downspouts, gutters, and drainage pipes. You’ll want to make sure all of these parts are in working order, which State Roofing Company can help you with. When looking at the gutters, thoroughly inspect the shingle grains, they protect the shingles from the sun’s rays.
4. Leaks
When a roof leaks, the water may be pouring out of one spot, but it’s actually leaking from something that’s closer to 10 feet away from the problem area. Common leakers include areas such as chimneys, plumbing vents, roof seam connecting additions, and head wall flashings.

Gutter Tips

September 4, 2018 By State Roofing

Don’t forget about your gutters!

As we enter the Fall rain season the condition of your gutters are important. Do you have sufficient downspouts and downspout size? Gutter companies are notorious for bidding jobs and leaving out the right number of downspouts and under-sizing them. Additional downspouts are costly and leaving them out gives them the low bid advantage.

With rains coming you need to have your gutters cleaned and joints sealed. And don’t forget to flush out your downspouts and underground drains that they are connected to.

Water flowing over the back of your gutter system can damage fascia and soffit. This can become a costly repair and allow water intrusion into your home.

And as always, use ladder safety. Let your certified and trained contractors do the work.
